A Japanese Research Institution of Using Your Work Without Permission — How to Verify from Berlin

If you are based in Berlin and believe a Japanese research institution has used your work or data without consent, taking immediate, careful action is essential. Intellectual property and authorship disputes are increasingly common in international research. Detective Agency Japan supports researchers by verifying the facts lawfully under Japanese regulations. With English communication, legal coordination, and a deep understanding of Japan’s academic environment, we help clarify whether unauthorized use has occurred, ensuring your rights are protected while maintaining professionalism and discretion throughout the process.

The Growing Complexity of International Research and IP Disputes

Increasing Cross-Border Research and Data Misuse

With international collaborations between Japan and Germany expanding, researchers face new challenges in protecting their intellectual property. In some cases, Japanese institutions have published results or used shared data without proper acknowledgment. Such actions may not always be intentional but can still lead to serious academic and legal consequences. Detective Agency Japan assists overseas researchers by verifying authorship misuse, data leaks, or unauthorized application of research outcomes within Japan’s legal framework.

Why Overseas Researchers Struggle to Confirm Misuse

Many foreign researchers in Berlin find it difficult to confirm how their work is used once it enters Japan’s academic ecosystem. University databases, industry partnerships, and conference proceedings are often accessible only in Japanese. Additionally, legal definitions of authorship and IP rights differ from European standards. Detective Agency Japan bridges this gap by conducting lawful, discreet investigations that clarify whether misconduct or simple miscommunication occurred.

The Importance of Legal and Professional Evidence

Acting emotionally or making public accusations can harm a researcher’s credibility and professional standing. Instead, objective evidence and lawful verification are crucial. Our agency collaborates with legal experts and academic consultants in Japan to gather accurate, admissible information. This ensures that any later claim or legal action is supported by solid proof, protecting both reputation and intellectual rights.

How Detective Agency Japan Supports IP Verification and Protection

Lawful Investigation under Japanese Regulations

Detective Agency Japan operates under Japanese law, ensuring every investigation is conducted ethically and legally. We collect verifiable data from public sources, academic registries, and professional networks to confirm how your research or data has been used. Our reports are written in English and can be shared with lawyers or institutions if formal proceedings become necessary.

Collaboration with Lawyers and Academic Advisors

We work closely with Japanese lawyers who specialize in intellectual property and research misconduct. Together with academic consultants, we can analyze publications, patents, and digital evidence to determine authorship violations. This dual approach allows Berlin-based researchers to receive both legal and academic validation of their claims, improving the credibility of future negotiations or court submissions.

Advantages and Considerations of Professional Involvement

Professional investigation ensures that evidence is collected properly and communications remain professional. However, researchers should understand that legal actions in Japan may take time and require official cooperation from institutions. Detective Agency Japan explains these limitations clearly and supports you throughout the process, helping balance accuracy, legality, and efficiency to achieve fair resolution.

Survey request flow

1.Inquiries

Before requesting a detective investigation, first contact the detective agency. Use email to communicate your inquiry or request outline. Consultation is free.

2.Consultation and Free Estimates

Detective agencies provide consultations and free estimates based on the content of your inquiry. We will share your needs and details of your case, and discuss appropriate methods and costs for detective investigation. I am also interviewing online.

3.Contract

If you are officially requesting a detective investigation, you will need a contract with a detective agency. The contract will detail the scope of the investigation, duration, fees and privacy protection. Before signing a contract, fully understand the contract contents and clauses, and sign and agree after being satisfied.

4.Compensation Payment

Research fees are paid in advance. Payment will be made in accordance with a fee structure clearly agreed upon under the contract. It is also necessary to settle expenses such as transportation expenses that were actually necessary after the survey.

5.Conducting investigations

Detective agencies conduct investigations under contract. Investigative methods and action plans vary from case to case, but professional detectives gather the necessary information and take steps to achieve their goals. The investigation will be conducted in accordance with the law. We cannot accept investigations that are illegal.

6.Providing Reports and Results

After the investigation is completed, the detective agency will provide reports and evidence. The report contains detailed results of the investigation and information gathered during the investigation. If necessary, we may consult with the office regarding the content of the report or request additional investigation.

Real Cases of Overseas Researchers Resolving IP Issues in Japan

Case 1 – Data Used Without Credit in a Japanese Journal

A Berlin-based molecular biologist discovered that her experimental data was included in a Japanese co-author’s publication without her name listed. Detective Agency Japan verified the origin of the data and obtained copies of the paper and correspondence. With this evidence, her lawyer successfully requested a correction through the Japanese journal, restoring her authorship rights and professional reputation.

Case 2 – Patent Filing Without Proper Consent

A Japanese research partner filed a patent using shared technology that originated from a Berlin institute. The researcher suspected unauthorized use and requested verification. Our team identified matching materials in the Japanese patent database, confirming the overlap. With legal coordination, the client reached a settlement acknowledging joint ownership, preventing future misuse.

Case 3 – Miscommunication Clarified Through Investigation

Not every case is malicious. In one instance, confusion arose when a Japanese university continued using shared datasets under an outdated agreement. Our investigation clarified that the contract was not renewed, leading to an amicable resolution. The researchers updated their agreement and resumed collaboration, avoiding unnecessary conflict.

Frequently Asked Questions about Research and IP Investigations

Can a private investigator really verify intellectual property misuse?

Yes. While investigators cannot directly enforce legal action, they can lawfully collect factual evidence in Japan—such as publication records, research data usage, or patent filings—that lawyers can later use. Detective Agency Japan ensures investigations comply with Japanese law and maintain academic integrity.

Is English communication available throughout the process?

Absolutely. All consultations, progress reports, and final findings can be handled entirely in English. Many of our clients are based overseas, including in Berlin, so we provide bilingual support to eliminate communication barriers and ensure clear understanding at every stage.

How long does an investigation usually take?

It depends on the complexity of the case. Simple publication checks may take one to two weeks, while data-related verification or patent cross-referencing may take several weeks. Our team provides an estimated timeline at the consultation stage, ensuring transparency before any agreement is made.

Protecting Your Research Rights from Abroad

When you suspect your research or intellectual property has been misused in Japan, it can be difficult to act effectively from overseas. Detective Agency Japan offers lawful, discreet, and English-supported investigations that help clarify the facts before any escalation. With cooperation from lawyers and academic experts, we ensure your findings are backed by credible evidence that can be used in Japan’s legal system. Whether your goal is to confirm unauthorized use, negotiate authorship, or prevent future disputes, our professional team stands ready to protect your intellectual contributions with integrity and transparency.

*All investigations are conducted in accordance with Japanese laws and regulations, which may differ from those in other countries.

If you are considering using a private detective agency or an inquiry agency, it is recommended that you first clarify the purpose of your request and the necessary information before proceeding with consultations or entering into an engagement contract. Keep in mind that hiring a private investigator involves costs, so it is important to proceed only when you are satisfied with the fee. When used appropriately according to the purpose, investigative services can provide highly valuable information later on. Therefore, it is essential to have thorough discussions with the agency and aim to make a well-prepared, high-quality request.
